Ali Gilbert - Run by the River

January 25, 2022

What if we told you that we had found the catchiest song of 2022 so far?

Released at the very beginning of the year, "Run by The River" is an excellent mix of acoustic vibes and folk-pop that will put a smile on your face if you need it.

After Lyca a few weeks ago, we lost another important member of our community last week, her companion Alex. As if fate was relentless. So we are "searching the answer", as Ali Gilbert sings so well in the first line of his new single.

The lyrics are absolutely divine, like a confession and a request for forgiveness. And the melody acts as an invitation to move on and dance no matter what. A real catalyst.

While doing my research, I realized that I had already been following Ali on Soundcloud for several years. And several of his songs already have a heart on my Spotify. There's no coincidence in that. And when I heard "Run by The River" for the first time, I immediately thought of you, dear listeners and readers: "oh, they're gonna love it for sure!". So do let me know if I was right or wrong!

About the song, it's not based on the artist's experience but it's purely fictional, as Ali told us: "This song is based on a fictional character who is confessing all his sins and seeking redemption on what he believes to be his last chance of forgiveness."

After a debut EP that talked about his real-life personal experiences about love rejection and mental health, Ali seems to have found the perfect escape with this new single, which allows listeners to interpret it in their own way, and make this song become their own. A successful bet, since the song can be interpreted in different ways. On my side, it gave me the desire to move forward after the terrible loss we suffered from, last week.

From the second chorus, we find ourselves singing along with Ali very easily. The very short bridge (13 seconds only!) gives way to a final chorus which comes very quickly to close this little gem. And when the music stops, you're like "What? Is it already over?" and you just want to listen again.

With stronger addictive power than heroin (okay, maybe not), "Run by The River" has an incredible and catchy melody that will haunt your mind for hours, days, weeks, and more. We got obsessed with this song, and there's no doubt you will.

Having already supported the Australian band Sons Of The East (by the way, they will be on tour in UK & Europe this year, don't miss them), Ali builds his universe, little by little, and surrounds himself with professionals who highlight his work wonderfully, such as Ben Stancombe and Guoda Garsvaite for the music video to watch below:

Sticking perfectly to the universe of the song, mixing B&W and color footage, the music video is a piece of art that is already collecting praise in comments on YouTube. Remember this name: Ali Gilbert. Maybe it's his first feature on IMC. But it won't be the last.
