We must admit that it took us several listens to realize that what we were listening to was real. From the first seconds of the intro, we were captivated by the warm and welcoming guitar of Arny Margret, an Iceland-based singer-songwriter.
Like an invitation to sit by the fire, "the world is between us" is a delicious indie-folk ballad, addressing a loved one who is far too far away.
Rarely have we seen so much poetry and delicacy in an almost naked performance. With just an acoustic guitar and an extraordinary voice, Arny gave us one of the biggest emotional slaps of this so far year.
One can feel the isolation and loneliness through all the lines of the song. Each line has a more powerful impact than the previous one, and every time her voice reaches very high notes with great ease, the thrill inevitably kicks in.
"I want to see the sun the way you see it" is probably our favorite line, just as much as "don't be late", sounding both like a warning and a cry for help.
This very emotional song is also accompanied by a music video shot in her country, Iceland, in winter, and the cars that disappear under the snow further reinforce the feeling of isolation, and the coldness of loneliness strikes us through the screen:
A marvel, whether visual or musical and a very nice discovery. The good news? A full-length album, "they only talk about the weather", will be released on October 21 on One Little Independent Records. And believe it or not, it will be a debut album. We can't wait to enjoy it!
Reach out to Arny Margret
