E.W. Harris - Hammerhands

August 15, 2022

E.W. Harris is from Brooklyn but is originally from Ohio. Very hairy and bearded, the artist has been releasing music for more than a decade, as his oldest release on Spotify is from 2010.

If you are a fan of Neil Young or in general of artists who know how to make this clever mix of Folk and Soul, you will love his new single "Hammerhands". There is something very intoxicating about this song. And this from the very first seconds. Those vocals on the intro gave us goosebumps immediately, even before he started singing. And when he sings his first line, we find ourselves with our mouths wide open and we say "No way! Do voices like that still exist?". Yes, a wonderful voice as comfortable in the bass as the treble.

Then we are as if struck by lightning by the strikingly colorful writing. Just close your eyes to imagine in front of us all that the artist is describing to us. A true magician of words, who juggles stylistic figures with disconcerting ease.

As the artist said, the song is about "a story of exile, of love lost and longing couched in a folk-style narrative tinged with classic soul, lofi, 60’s pop, and blues, and is the first in a series of genre-bending singles introducing his forthcoming LP “Homunculus IV".

And we agree with this feeling of exile because from the intro, we take a rocket to fly away towards more lenient skies (yes, listen carefully and you will hear the astronaut speak).

We had the impression of returning to a time that no longer exists. This time when you just had to put headphones on your head with the volume turned up to escape. Unfortunately, nowadays, the smartphone and social networks have replaced these magical moments, without bringing the same level of emotional intensity. But thanks to E.W. Harris, you can close your eyes and just savor what you hear, as an absolute rarity in the indie music landscape. A nugget.
