Our thoughts

Together with Daniel Trakell, Hazlett is one of the only two Australian artists who made it into the IMC Family. And if you’re new here, quick tip: the IMC Family includes artists we’ve featured at least five times. Which means they never disappoint. You can trust them to deliver 200% quality music every single time.

Hazlett’s been blowing us away since 2022. And today, we’re celebrating his sixth feature with his new single “blue jean”.

The song opens with an intro that’s clearly not in a hurry. It takes its time, and that’s exactly what makes it so good. Hazlett’s vocals arrive like they always do: warm, soft, with a touch of reverb and those beautiful harmonies that make you feel like you’re wrapped in cotton. Comfortable straight away.

But this track doesn’t exactly follow the usual Hazlett recipe. The more you listen, the more it builds. Slowly. Gently. Until the indie folk atmosphere you thought you were in starts shifting... and suddenly we’re not that far from indie rock.

Then comes what we secretly wait for in every single IMC feature. The goosebumps. Finally here, around 2:30. That’s when the full band joins in, Hazlett reaches for the high notes, and the emotion hits like a wave. Everything’s in place. Nothing’s too much. Just the perfect moment.

“blue jean” gives you more than 4 minutes and 30 seconds of real musical pleasure. Not designed for the fast-scrolling generation. This is for the ones who still know how to slow down and actually listen. A little out of sync with the times maybe, but exactly what we need. Put on some good headphones. Let it in.

Hazlett's take on "blue jean"

"This song really snuck up on me, so it’s even a surprise for me to tell you it’s here… That’s the thing, though, isn’t it? Life never really waits until you’re ready, does it? One minute you’re on a roll, and next, you’re falling behind. One day, everything is dandy, then you wake up on Tuesday and feel out of love with it all. This song tears me up more now than when I wrote it. I think because at the time when I wrote it, I was just acting on instinct and whatever intuition I had left inside me. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it, I hope you go easy on it, and most of all, I hope you find a little piece of yourself in it. There may be a couple of tears this evening, but at least I know it meant something".

A bit more about Hazlett

_The honest truth… I’m just one heck of an emotional, stubborn, simple, romantic guy. I rarely like socialising with large groups of people. My circle’s small. I can’t blow smoke up other people’s behinds for a leg up or their attention. I’d rather help people sort out their own life, instead of my own. I love all creative people but I’m inspired and jealous of them at the same time. I’m a little broken just like you. I am the way I am and at the end of the day people are going to like what I do or they are going to hate it. Either way this thing goes, at least it’s going to be honest and from the heart_.

Lyrics

Broken finger
Hurt me and let it linger
Hunny, holding on

Moons and feelings
Surefire to kill the evening
Maybe I'm not who you really want it from
Hunny, holding on

I could never find home running away
You were on the outside trying to change
Bruise my bones
We'll be gone
We could never find home running away

Half assed sorry's
Fill a journal full of worry
Soul tired, back to bed

Blue jean please stay
Stopped loving me on Tuesday
Bad things and the dark thoughts you never said
Soul tired, back to bed

I could never find home running away
You were on the outside trying to change
Bruise my bones
We'll be gone
We could never find home running away

Go, but don't leave me
Take problems over easy
Hard times feel like home
Hug the lightning
Then tell me I was lying
A glass house and all our stones
